Built for King Mausollos by his wife and sister three years after his
death. It remained standing for sixteen years until damaged by an earthquake. The
Mausoleum was forgotten until discovered by the Knights of St. John in 1494. They used the
ruins to fortify a fort to defend against the invading Turks. |
