Left the hotel with Jamal, our taxi driver/tour guide for the next couple of days. Heading north with our final destination being Amman. With sightseeing it would take us all day to get there. Patricia would be traveling with us for most of the day then crossing the Israeli border in the late afternoon. She had to get back for an art exhibit. She was visiting for 2 months from Mexico as part of a UNESCO project as a teacher and a sculptor. She collects exotic seeds too. First stop was an old castle-a little on the boring side but we did our tourist duty and took a look. We were traveling on the scenic highway King's Highway, although it probably was not much different than the Desert Highway. The scenic highway was a lot of rocky desert with a few impressive rocky canyons. Shobak Castle built by King Baldwin in the 1100's, pales in comparison to the next one, Karnak castle, the largest of the Crusade Castles that stretch from Turkey to Sinai. It is full of tunnels and secret passageways. Truly a castle ruin the way you would envision. There is also a gruesome tidbit about heads in wooded boxes being thrown over the high stone walls. Next stop north was near Madaba, Mount Nebo. Moses' last request of God was for a view from the top of Mount Nebo. It is a beautiful spot, lush landscape peacefully leads you to a memorial church and a large modernistic cross sculpture. The memorial church is an appealing combination of modern and ancient decor. Archeological digs exposed unique well-preserved mosaic floors from 531 AD, definitely the prettiest we have seen. Back in town we made a stop at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George and took a peek at the 6th century mosaic map of the Holy Land. At this church is also a picture of the Virgin Mary with a third arm and a blue hand that just appeared when she happened to visit there in 1978. Believe it or not. Next stop, the Dead Sea. At 400 meters below sea level it is the lowest point on earth. Scooter and I planned to take a swim in the famous salty sea. Jamal dropped us off at the Dead Sea Rest House where you pay 2 dinar for a swim and a shower. There were about a dozen people on the shore, that looked like any other beach. In we went-me first while Scooter filmed the first dip. whoa, up I went like sitting in a chair, standing back up is a little tricky , the water feels slimy--it was fun.
